A New Year

2015 was a slow year for me from a writing productivity perspective. The move to a new city, getting our new house in order, and starting a new job have all led to a major disruption in my output. 


Too, when I did find a spot of free time, it was consumed by necessary editing and publishing tasks to which I had already been obligated.

I had hoped to see a few more pieces out in 2015, but despite meeting submission deadlines, they weren't published as planned. Hopefully they are well on their way for 2016.

Thus, I only have one publication in 2015, a short story in the benefit anthology Legends of New Pulp Fiction. I was very pleased and honored to be included in this, and hopefully readers will enjoy my Green Ghost story, "Chance of a Ghost." Even more importantly, I hope the book helps fellow publisher Tommy Hancock and his family in this time of need. (And check out that awesome cover by the talented Doug Klauba!)

Significantly, December 13, 2015 saw the launch of Wold Newton Family.com, with much appreciated help from fellow Wold Newton fans and experts Christopher Paul Carey and Jason Aiken. The site is dedicated to providing "accurate and factual information on the canonical Wold Newton Family as created and envisioned by Philip José Farmer, and on deuterocanonical works authorized by Mr. Farmer or his estate."

There is a new article posted there today, Philip José Farmer's "The Arms of Tarzan."

2016 should see the publication of one already-written non-fiction pop culture piece and two already-written short stories—one of which has been waiting in the wings for six long years. The latter is either coming out this year or it will have to move along to a new home.

I'm hunkering down to whip out an Avenger novel, after which comes intensive research, rereading, worldbuilding, outlining, and finishing the Doc Caliban novel The Monster on Hold (begun by Philip José Farmer in the late 1970s and early 1980s). Monster is slated for a summer 2017 release.

Shreve Memorial Library's 2015 Author Fair / Comic Fest

The Shreve Memorial Library's 2015 Author Fair / Comic Fest was held on June 20, but this is the first time I've had a chance to post about it.

My pal Chuck Loridans and I shared a table. I hawked Meteor House books, Philip José Farmer books published by Titan, and my own books from various publishers. Chuck represented the Renzi Education and Art Center, where he tirelessly volunteers teaching kids the art of creating comics and movies.

It was a small event, but the traffic was very good and I got to meet some other local creators. Sold a decent number of books, too. The highlight was our panel presentation.

CREATIVE MYTHOGRAPHY:

Shared Universes from the Perspective of Pulp Fiction and Philip José Farmer's Wold Newton Family

Our panel was intended to run from 2 to 3 pm (3 pm being the end of the Author Fair), but by the end time we had only covered about 2/3 of the material. We took a vote and the audience very enthusiastically wanted to stay through the compete presentation, which was flattering. Chuck was great and charmed the audience, as always.

It occurred to me that our presentation serves as a good primer to Wold-Newtonry, as well as a brief overview of what Farmerian books are available today and from what publishers.

The Evil in Pemberley House--back on sale!!

After the summer 2014 publication of the Meteor House edition of The Evil in Pemberley House, the Duchess of Greystoke—Pat Wildman herself!—wrote to me pointing out three minor errors, text which was missing from the original hardcover edition. This was mortifying, to say the least.

Due to major life events occurring at the same time--a relocation to another state for a new job--I was unable to give this situation the attention it deserved until recently. Consequently, I and Meteor House decided to stop selling the edition until we had a solid plan for correcting the errors.

I'm pleased to say that the book is now back on sale!

Meteor House will include an errata sheet, signed by me, with every new order of this first printing. For customers who already bought the book, Meteor House will include the errata sheet in the shipment of any of their latest books. Newsflash! Meteor House has released The Scarlet Jaguar (second in the Pat Wildman series, and winner of the 2014 New Pulp Award Winner for Best Novella) on Nook.

I know that it's a bit strange that Pat Wildman #2 is out in ebook before the first volume, The Evil in Pemberley House. This happened because Meteor House secured the rights to reissue Pemberley House after they released The Scarlet Jaguar. The print edition of Pemberley House is currently out of stock, but Meteor House tells me more copies will be available soon, after which an ebook edition will also come out (on both Kindle and Nook). 

After that...rest assured, more Pat Wildman adventures are on their way!

I am still living in the land of unpacking boxes, so I can't devote much to today's celebration of
the 219th anniversary of the Wold Cottage meteor's fall and irradiation of a group of very special people.

Fortunately, friends and fellow fans are here to fill the gap.

This is certainly something that I'm celebrating today!

This blog is not dead....

I'm bummed that six months have passed since the last update here. 

Last summer everything went for a loop when we realized we were likely moving. Our old house was in very good shape but needed a lot of little things done to make it salable. Little things that added up and accounted for every single weekend and spare moment.

Likely moving became definitely moving which meant a new role in my wife's company for her, packing, moving, selling our house, buying a new house, and a brand new job in a new town for me. We've been here six weeks and haven't stopped for a moment: new job, new responsibilities, new city, new people, new house (which was in great shape but still has required a trip to Home Depot or Ace every weekend for some new thing). Vet visits for our animals to ensure continuity of care for them--especially our diabetic cat. Plumbers at the house. Figuring out how to get good gluten free food (for my wife) in a new city that's not as forward thinking in that area as Colorado was

We really haven't had a break to speak of over in over six months, and are maybe halfway through our boxes. Maybe we'll catch up over the holidays--my wife has accrued time off, since she's been at her company quite a while. The newbie (me) gets Dec 24 and 25 off, so I won't have much additional time to help.

All that said, it's been a good transition and we're happy. But exhausted, and the end goal (finishing unpacking and getting our house in order) is not in sight.

If I have not been in touch with you, didn't respond to an email, left you hanging in some way...  I apologize. I can't say it will get substantially better in the next month or two, but I'm hopeful. Thanks for your patience.

The reviews keep coming in for A Girl and Her Cat!

Very nice review from Off the Presses over at Diamond Galleries!

This is a light and breezy, action packed story that takes you right into the world of one of the most classic female action heroes of the last half decade.

The action rolls right through the story and the heroes are more than up to whatever comes their way. From fighting biker gangs to hotel brawls and over to slipping into a fortress of a mansion, Honey West and T.H.E Cat never once fail to rise to the occasion.

In the style of a classic detective novel they may get threatened a lot and even more than beat up a bit along the way, but they throw back a shot and shrug it all off as part of the job.

We hear what Honey thinks about the men she deals with, we know her strengths and in the hands of Eckert and Baugh, she attains a much more complete persona than she may have done in the original setting.

Granted some of that has to do with the fact that they are writing in a time when standards are considerably different than the ones that the Ficklings originally worked in. Still, Eckert and Baugh breathe a new, modern life into a character who seldom betrayed her origins in the mindset of a fifties paperback detective.

Throughout the novel they create a complete and believable universe for Honey’s action and life. As with any good detective story there are a few coincidences and more than a few surprises. But nothing ever moves past the realm of the possible.

There are two extra features at the end of this new novel. First up Eckert builds a wonderful sense of logic to the timeline of Honey West’s life. With the first novel taking place in 1957, he is able to work across the other eight titles and create a near perfect order to her life. One that allows a reader to see the detective’s career and her adventures as part of a continuous whole.

In a second article Baugh affords T.H.E. Cat the same courtesy. By his own admission the writer has to work more on “deduction and guesswork” than facts available. But his method proves successful as what he showcases builds a convincing and relatively tight life for Cat.

A Girl and Her Cat is the perfect way for new readers to discover two of adventure fictions classiest and most classic characters. Old fans will be pleased with the way that Eckert and Baugh have retained Honey’s smoldering sensuality and tough demeanor while sacrificing nothing for the modern reader.

Honey West and T.H.E. Cat: A Girl and Her Cat, was released just a few weeks ago and is racking up some nice reviews:

"I'd been looking forward to this one for a while, so I was pleased to be offered an advance pdf to review.

Honey West is a female PI, originally introduced in This Girl For Hire (1957), by Gloria and Forest Fickling under the pseudonym “G.G. Fickling”. This was the first of a series of nine novels written between 1957 and 1964 (followed by a two book revival in 1971/72). Most people will be more familiar with the short-lived 1965-66 TV series, starring Anne Francis in the lead role....

Ex cat burglar turned bodyguard, T.H.E Cat is possibly less well-known, as there were no books. The TV series, starring Robert Loggia, ran for just 26 episodes in 1966/67.... 

As those familiar with the previous works of Win Scott Eckert would expect, the crossovers do not stop with the main two characters. There are quite a few other characters and places from assorted print, television and film sources, albeit thinly disguised for copyright reasons... I won't mention any others here, as that would spoil the fun to be had spotting them for yourselves. It would be easy, when shoehorning in these various pop-culture references, to mar the flow of the story. Thankfully, Eckert and Baugh are far too experienced to fall into that trap. All the extra character cameos are perfectly logical and, more importantly, it won't harm the story in the slightest if the reader doesn't manage to spot some, or even all of them. 

I really don't want to say too much about the actual story. I hate spoilers. Suffice to say that it's an excellent fast-paced adventure, and one that left me looking forward to more. As I have come to expect from both authors, the writing is of a high quality...."
