This book was rubbish. "Sherlock Holmes's War of the Worlds" was far superior, even despite the love story involving Holmes and Mrs. Hudson.

Aw, don't hold back, Ray. ;-)

I enjoyed SH'S WAR OF THE WORLDS AS WELL. THE SECOND WAR OF THE WORLDS made an important contribution to Wold-Newtonry by proposing that the Martioan invaders came from a parallel dimension. By the John Carter story in the antho WOTW: GLOBAL DISPATCHES, we know this alternate dimension is that in which Barsoom resides. :-) The idea of the invaders coming from Barsoom was then picked up in LOEG, v.2. :-)

I agree with Ray, whilst I appreciate the contribution of SWOTW, I enjoyed SHWOTW better.

GLOBAL DISPATCHED rawked! Especially the Effenger story!

BTW, If I say I really like the cover, does that make me a leg man?

That romantic sub-plot between Holmes and Mrs. Hudson is the only thing I remember from SHWOTW, and for all the wrong reasons. I decided to give Manly Wade Wellman a second chance and read one of the Silver John novels and found that to be more to my liking. That's a series of books I should read again.....

There was another book somewhere... my memory fails me ...that tried to explain the romance with Mrs. Hudson as being a cover: It was really Irene Adler in disguise. Win, does this ring a bell? Was that just someone in the Wold Newton community, or was it established in prose somewhere?

Ray,

It's not a book, it's a Wold Newton article by Dennis Power on my Wold Newton Universe site .

That's what us crazy WN folks do... like the Sherlockians, we take tings that don't make sense and write articles to explain the "true" story and make everything fit together more smoothly. ;-)

Hey, the book's cover caught my eye. I stumbled across a terrific image related to this over at DeviantArt.com just yesterday. It's my desktop wallpaper:

That is a great pic, William.

I'm amazing at the amount of comments this one book cover generated.

Thanks for following along here! :-)

Best,

I have the book, but never read it.

There is a reason why.

When I got it, I learned it was part of a series. I wanted to get the rest of the series before I read them. I have yet to find the first one, so I haven't read this one yet ("Kar Kaball") (the second one). The third in the series is "The Island Snatchers".

There is another book by him, "Druid's World", which is a varient on the story of KK.
