2017 (and Beyond) Writing Projects

Following on the heels of my 2016 writing review, this is an overview of what I have planned for 2017 and 2018. I'm happy to say that most these projects are firm commitments, and won't leave much space in my schedule for additional work.

That said, I am always open to discussing chance-of-a-lifetime, no-way-can-you-turn-this-down projects!


The Avenger–Domino Lady short story. In my Avenger story "Death and the Countess" (The Avenger Chronicles, Moonstone Books, 2008), I referred to an "untold tale," the first meeting of The Avenger and the Domino Lady. I am currently in progress on this story, which fills a neat little space between Ron Goulart's "The Return of the Iron Skull" and "Death and the Countess."

Next, an Avenger novel for Moonstone. Novella length, really, but who's counting. This one is already generally plotted and should not take long to write once I get cranking.

A Sherlock Holmes short story to be submitted to The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories – Part VII: Eliminate the Impossible. I have the idea for this, but have not plotted or outlined it yet. It may well be a semi-sequel to my tale "No Ghosts Need Apply" (The Phantom Chronicles 2, Moonstone Books, 2010). That story had a neat bit of Wold-Newtonry (if I do say so) which has gone largely unnoticed, and which I'd like to extend in the Holmes tale.

The biggie... completing Philip José Farmer's unfinished fourth Doc Caliban novel, The Monster on Hold, due out from Meteor House in Summer 2018. This will require rereading A Feast Unknown, Lord of the Trees, and The Mad Goblin (for the umpteenth time), as well as intensive research, detailed outlining, worldbuilding, writing, rewriting, and polishing. I expect to spend the bulk of my writing time between now and spring 2018 on this. 

Slipped in the cracks of all this I will be continuing to research and put together material which will result in a proposal for a licensed character I would very much like to write.

It feels good to be back in the game.

The Evil in Pemberley House--back on sale!!

After the summer 2014 publication of the Meteor House edition of The Evil in Pemberley House, the Duchess of Greystoke—Pat Wildman herself!—wrote to me pointing out three minor errors, text which was missing from the original hardcover edition. This was mortifying, to say the least.

Due to major life events occurring at the same time--a relocation to another state for a new job--I was unable to give this situation the attention it deserved until recently. Consequently, I and Meteor House decided to stop selling the edition until we had a solid plan for correcting the errors.

I'm pleased to say that the book is now back on sale!

Meteor House will include an errata sheet, signed by me, with every new order of this first printing. For customers who already bought the book, Meteor House will include the errata sheet in the shipment of any of their latest books. Black Gate does Wold Newton: #4 of 4

The fourth and final Black Gate post covering the recent Titan Books anthology, Tales of the Wold Newton Universe, is now live. In this installment, Christopher Paul Carey interviews me about the Wold Newtonian influences on my contribution to the book, "The Wild Huntsman."

[Philip José] Farmer’s world-building, drawing on the best in adventure, mystery, horror, thriller, and science fiction, made an indelible imprint on my psyche. Once one studies the source materials, Farmer’s Wold Newton genealogy, and his methods, one can join in on the Game, just as Sherlockians do with the Great Detective, and propose new genealogical connections or characters who exist in the wider Wold Newton Universe (WNU). 

The WNU provides a ready-made storytelling backdrop, and it been my privilege to add to the tapestry with my tales of Pat Wildman and the hidden origins of the Wold Newton Family.

Tales of the Wold Newton Universe

A collection of Wold Newton-inspired short stories by Farmerphiles, experts, and the Grand Master of SF himself.

I am pleased to announce that Titan Books has settled on the final Table of Contents for the Wold Newton Anthology, Tales of the Wold Newton Universe. The book collects, for the first time ever in one volume, Philip José Farmer's Wold Newton short stories, and also includes tales by other writers.

The Introduction by Win Scott Eckert (coauthor with Farmer of the Wold Newton novel The Evil in Pemberley House) and Christopher Paul Carey (coauthor with Farmer of the Khokarsa novel The Song of Kwasin) will provide an overview of Farmer's Wold Newton Family and Mythos. In addition, Eckert and Carey will provide brief introductions to the stories themselves, explaining why each entry is a Wold Newton tale.

Cover Reveal: Sherlock Holmes und die Legende von Greystoke

With a tip of the hat to Rias Nuninga at the Philip José Farmer International Bibliography site, I'm pleased to reveal the cover for the new German edition of Farmer's Wold Newton novel The Adventure of the Peerless Peer. 

The new edition, Sherlock Holmes und die Legende von Greystoke (Sherlock Holmes and the Legend of Greystoke), is forthcoming in Spring 2013 from Atlantis Verlag (German version). English translation: Atlantis Verlag. 

I'm very happy to report that the afterword I penned for the Titan Books reissue (The Peerless Peer, June 2011) has also been translated and will be included in the German edition. The foreword is by Christian Endres and the new cover is by Mark Freier.

The book will be available in hardcover, softcover, and eBook.

Sherlock Holmes: The Crossovers Casebook

I am reliably informed by my pal Matthew Baugh that Sherlock Holmes: The Crossovers Casebook is now available. This was the last book edited by our friend Howard Hopkins before he passed away, and I can't wait to read it. The lineup of contributing writers is superb, and includes Baugh, Hopkins, Joe Gentile, Richard Dean Starr, Martin Gately, Will Murray, Don Roff, Chris Sequiera, Martin Powell, and Barbara Hambly.

My tale, "The Adventure of the Fallen Stone," involves Holmes with other detectives in the Sherlockian vein, Blake of Baker Street and Harry Dickson, as well as a Rohmerian femme fatale. Holmes' brother Mycroft has a significant role, and he sends the intrepid group off to the sleepy village of Wold Newton, where a certain meteor once fell.

The story also follows directly from the events of The Peerless Peer, which was edited for publication by Philip Jose Farmer, although you need not read Peer to enjoy and understand "The Fallen Stone."

FarmerCon VII / Pulpfest 2012

I've finalized my plans to be at FarmerCon VII  / Pulpfest 2012 in August. I'll be at the Meteor House table, where I'll have copies of the new Titan Books editions of Philip Jose Farmer's Wold Newton books The Other Log of Phileas Fogg and Time's Last Gift, as well as Lord Tyger. I imagine I'll also have news about more Farmer reissues from Titan (hint, hint). My friend Christopher Paul Carey will be there promoting Gods of Opar.

I'll also have copies of the recent Tales of the Shadowmen 8: Agents Provocateurs (Black Coat Press) and I imagine Moonstone Books' Sherlock Holmes: The Crossovers Casebook will be out by then, so I'll bring copies. Lots of Wold-Newtony goodness in my stories in those volumes.

I also have hopes that Moonstone's The Green Hornet: Still at Large, which I'm co-editing with Joe Gentile and Matthew Baugh, will be out by then, although that's not confirmed yet. If it's available, of course I'll have copies with me.

Going Global in 2012

A German translation of Philip Jose Farmer's classic Sherlock Holmes-Lord Greystoke pastiche The Peerless Peer will appear in 2012 from German publisher Atlantis Verlag as Sherlock Holmes and the Legend of Greystoke. I'm pleased to note that the afterword I provided for the 2011 edition from Titan Books (which appears to be selling like hotcakes on Amazon) will be translated and included in the German edition.

Later in January, French publisher Riviere Blanche is putting out Les Compagnons de l'Ombre (Tome 9),which will include "L'Invitation de Nadine," a French translation of my Wold Newton story "Nadine's Invitation."

Finally, although plans are not finalized yet, there is a decent chance that I'll have a Sherlock Holmes story included in a projected second volume of the Brazilian anthology Sherlock Holmes--Secret Adventures. The first volume, Sherlock Holmes--Aventuras Secretas, is edited by Carlos Orsi and Marcelo Galvão, and is due out from Brazilian publisher Editora Draco on January 27, 2012.

The Peerless Peer in German

I'm very pleased to announce that contracts are signed and that a German translation of Philip Jose Farmer's classic Sherlock Holmes-Lord Greystoke pastiche The Peerless Peer will appear in 2012 from publisher Atlantis Verlag.

My friend Christian Endres has broken the news on his blog, and gave me the go-ahead to do so here. Christian, a big fan of Farmer and the Wold Newton Universe, was instrumental in making this happen, and this project is "his baby."

I'm pleased to note that the afterword I provided for the 2011 edition from Titan Books (which appears to be selling like hotcakes on Amazon) will also be included in the German edition.

Sherlock Holmes: The Crossovers Casebook from Moonstone Books

This weekend I put some other projects aside, temporarily, to begin work in earnest on a short story for Moonstone Books' Sherlock Holmes: The Crossovers Casebook, edited by Howard Hopkins.

If you're a fan of my encyclopedic two-volume Crossovers: A Secret Chronology of the World, well, yes, this Holmes anthology is exactly what you think it is. :-)

My tale's working title is "The Dynamics of a Meteor," and the plan right now is to loosely tie it in to my regencypunk series of Wold Newton Origins stories "Is He in Hell?" (The Worlds of Philip José Farmer 1: Protean Dimensions, Meteor House, 2010) and "Nadine's Invitation" (Tales of the Shadowmen 7: Femmes Fatales, Black Coat Press, 2010), although of course the Holmes story takes place some one-hundred years after those stories, and will stand on its own. (It should be noted that "Nadine's Invitation" features a cameo by Holmes' great-grandfather.)

Intrigued yet?

Of course, the story will need to go through the usual processes and be accepted by Ye Merry Editor, Mr. Hopkins. Guess I'd better get writing! :-)
